Idiot Nation

Does anyone else see the significance of newspaper over the Internet? Or news programs on tv? Should we be forced learn a foreign language? Would you agree that the only way to get a mass involment in politics is of their was some kind of give a way or some sports lIke atmosphere?

Idiot Nation

2) do you think that just because we don't read the news paper that makes us stupid?
3) do you think that Bush's grades at Yale really have anything to do with how well you run a country?

Idiot Nation

1) Do you believe our challenge is to make politics as engaging as sports?
2) Would you agree that our problem is that adults who pay students tuition are no better than the students on how much they know?
3) Do you think that we shouldn't be required to learn foreign languages as stated in the article?

Idiot Nation

Do you think people are really this stupid?

Do you feel Moore takes his argument to the extreme?

How do you think you would have done on this test?

Idiot Nation

I personally did not like this article. I don't like his negativity towards our way of life and think he is just bitter about his own life. He basically says high school is some kind of sick joke, I personally loved high school, he probably just had a bad experience and is generalizing it. I also thought it was ignorant of him himself to say things like "As Americans, we have quite a proud tradition of being represented by ignorant high-ranking officials", our country is pretty well off, I think our leaders deserve credit for it. Would you agree with this?

What kind of priority do you think we place on education in America?

On the other hand, something I really do agree with in the article is the fact that teachers are not given enough credit, respect, or even pay. He makes a good point saying something like, a teacher is someone other than yourself that your child will spend a whole lot of time with and the teacher will really influence them, therefor wouldn't we want the teacher to be the best. Since teachers don't get paid much, they are desperate for teachers and don't always get to hire "the best". Would you agree that teachers should be paid more and given more credit?

College Debt

Congress is constantly trying to improve our tests scores so we look good in comparison to other nations. Why not make higher education free? Is paying $80,000+ for a piece of paper worth it? If you knew you could do well without a degree would you still go to college?

How I write my papers

As I was writing one of the conference papers that I have to finish this week, I realized that I don't talk about my own writing method in class. So I decided I'd share how I'm going about writing my paper on the Thames Embankment. For this paper, I researched three books and about 4 journal articles. I always read the books first and I read selectively, meaning I just read a few chapters. The reason I go for the books is that books usually have a sustained argument and tend to be more thoroughly researched, while arguments in articles tend to be fleeting and the sources are very limited. I haven't read the journal articles yet, because at the moment what I have from the books are alright. Here is a picture of how I'm organizing my thoughts:
What you're looking at is a visual arrangement of how ideas align in the sources I've read so far. If I had to guess, this jumble is not going to make sense to anyone else but me, and that's okay. The pieces of paper have description of passages, page numbers, and the initial of the author. I group them according to topic/subtopic, so that when I'm writing I know which sources to refer to. Essentially, this is my synthesis, except I haven't written it down. My entire paper is going to BE the synthesis. I'm going to upload a copy of my paper so far. Containing Filth and Class I started this morning. As you can see, it takes me a while to write, which means I have to give myself a lot of time for writing. My attempts at cramming have always been disastrous, so I start early when I can (This paper isn't due until the March 15). As I'm writing, I like to read what I said aloud. I like to hear whether what I have makes sense or not. I also tend to find my mistakes that way: I think of what words to add or change and I find passages to move or delete. I guess this is one reason I take so long to finish. What you don't see in the picture or my paper is that in the background I'm blasting music. I have a dance mix (Usually songs with 130+ bpm) that gets my heart rate pumping. It prevents me from falling a sleep and it gives me a nice beat to bop to. So I guess my point here is that as a writer I have my own personality. I do things my way. And as writers you should also do things your way. Do what works.

Debt by Degree

1) Why has the cost of a college degree gone up?
2) Students borrow money and don't end up finishing college, so they are in debt without a degree. Is the money issue a scare to stop schooling?
3) How are we suppose to make colleges more productive places?

Banking Conception of Education

1- At what school age does banking stop? Or does it never? Even when in college.
2- Do children just retain the information to get the correct answers or do good on a test, instead of actually learning something?
3- At a younger age, I think the banking method works! You can't expect a group of first graders to give their opinions about adding and subtracting numbers when they don't really know how to do it. So in a way having the teacher doing all the teaching is more beneficial to the students.

Learning is Key

1- Do the children who attend a school that does not have a lot of money going into it, have a lesser opportunity to learn the same material as those who attend a wealthier school? (ex- schools with computer labs vs. those who don't)
2- Does being book smart help you for the future? or is being street smart and knowing skills more helpful for our futures?
3-What is the true meaning of being an educated person?
1) Do you agree with the author when he says "Technical training is training in what is sure to be obsolete anyways..?"

2) Do you agree that "education is about power?"

3) What do others think it should mean to educate?"
